SECRETS WOMEN KEEP I

Lesley Asare and Indigo Williams were commissioned by The Body Narratives to create Secrets Women Keep, a poetry and visual arts installation for 'A Different Mirror' at Brixton East Gallery in April 2014.

The aim of the project was to create a safe space for participants to discuss what it means to take up space as Women of Colour in a society and culture where constructed ideals about race and gender have rendered Women of Colour arguably invisible.

Indigo Williams worked with 6 Women of Colour through workshops to create a poems that explored experiences of shame that had had an impact on the participant’s relationship with their bodies, while Lesley created gum tape body sculptures of each women to explore perceptual body image.

The installation shared each woman's poem, body sculpture as well as objects that represented significant parts of their story and the secrets they shared.
